Chapter 8

The Future of Museum Collecting: Motivated by Preservation and Education

As previous chapters have illustrated, the collection of cultural property has become increasingly complicated, difficult, and risky because of the growing number of legal and ethical concerns affecting acquisitions and the unprecedented rigor with which these concerns have been interpreted. Indeed, it may no longer be possible for museums to amass comprehensive collections of archaeological material and antiquities because of the expansive number of restrictions.1 A further complication is negative media coverage of the role that museums have purportedly played in the destruction of archaeological heritage. Given this situation, it is often difficult to remember that all parties are ostensibly working toward the same goals: the preservation of cultural heritage and the advancement of knowledge.
